Mail Service Pharmacy Accreditation

This fast-growing distribution channel for pharmacy benefit management drove the need for accreditation standards to support mail service pharmacies with a commitment to quality improvement, accountability, consumer protection and patient care.

URAC’s Mail Service Pharmacy Accreditation standards cover core organizational quality, customer service, communications and disclosure, drug utilization management, pharmacy operations, and a process for mail service outcomes measurement and quality improvement.

The URAC-accredited mail service pharmacy:

  • Maintains ongoing consumer communications and support, including e-mail, telephone, and in-person
  • Ensures the timeliness and performance of customer service center operations, including telephone performance monitoring and metrics
  • Has a communication protocol in place to provide consumer notification regarding Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Class I drug recalls
  • Provides information that are appropriate to the diversity of its enrollment population
  • Supports electronic prescribing and is integrated with its medication management systems
  • Acts as a patient advocate to gain access to medications through sources outside of the third party payer if necessary
  • Has written policies and documented procedures for reporting drug utilization management findings to the quality management committee or other quality oversight body
  • And more.
