Alan P. Spielman, President and CEO of URAC, Responds to Supreme Court

Washington, DC – The Supreme Court’s June 28, 2012, decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act signals an historic turning point in how health care is delivered in the United States. This decision allows everyone in America’s health care system to begin doing the important work necessary to implement this law which will benefit millions of Americans. URAC, a leading health care accreditation organization, is ready to assist in the implementation of the quality and education components of the Act which will promote consumer safety and access to quality health care.

“The Affordable Care Act will dramatically affect consumer choices and insurance competition, increasing transparency and efficiency across health benefit plans,” said Alan P. Spielman, President & CEO of URAC. “URAC’s health plan accreditation programs will help consumers get the best quality health care possible.”

URAC specifically developed its Health Plan Accreditation Program with Measures for Exchanges to provide a comprehensive, high-quality evaluation of health care organizations, and it aligns with the nine components for accrediting health plans as outlined in the PPACA Section 1311 requirements for State Exchanges.

URAC’s Health Plan Standards now meet all of these PPACA Requirements. Its accreditation programs are enhanced with an even greater focus on quality improvement activities that promote patient safety across the continuum of care:

  • Wellness and health promotion
  • Care coordination
  • Medication safety and care compliance
  • Rewarding quality
  • Care delivery through a patient-centered health care home network
  • Mental health parity
  • HIPAA breach requirements
  • Measures – patient centeredness, coordination of care, patient safety, health plan administration
  • Effectiveness of care, and health information technology integration; and
  • Patient experience of care (CAHPS Survey.)
