URAC Accreditation Experts to speak at 2017 Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit

Sunday, April 23rd, 2017

LAS VEGAS, NV –  April 24, 2017  – URAC’s President and CEO Kylanne Green and Director of Pharmacy Heather Bonome have been selected to speak at the 2017 Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit at the Wynn & Encore Las Vegas. URAC is the premier accrediting organization in the U.S. pharmacy industry.

Speaking on May 1 at 10 a.m., Green will review how the growth of specialty drugs, developed to treat patients with chronic or complex genetic diseases and disorders, has attracted a plethora of new players to the specialty pharmacy market, making for fierce competition.

Noting that specialty drugs are expected to account for up to half of all U.S. drug spending by 2020, Green will discuss how specialty pharmacists take an active role managing patient care, including by helping patients to cope with treatment side effects, remain adherent to complex medication therapies and obtain resources to help defray drug costs.

During the session, titled, “Competing in the Specialty Pharmacy Market: Key Competencies for Performance in Value-Based Healthcare,” Green will also discuss how accreditation by a nationally recognized accrediting organization helps pharmacies achieve the clinical, operational and financial best practices that lead to high-quality, low-cost, safe patient care.

Bonome will participate in a panel discussion at 2 p.m., April 30, “Improving Direct-to-Patient, Temperature Sensitive Distribution Process to Meet Accreditation.” Bonome and co-panelists Rafik H. Bishara, Ph.D., Technical Advisor and Former Director, Quality Knowledge Management and Technical Support, Eli Lilly & Company – Pharmacist, and Mark Maurice, Senior Project Manager and Industrial Engineer at Sensitech Inc., will discuss the cost-effective “cold chain” requirements that pharmacies must follow when direct-shipping refrigerated medications to patients.

At 4 p.m. on April 30, Bonome will present the session “Be Prepared: What You Need to Know to Be Ready for Your Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation,” where she will review basic accreditation requirements for specialty pharmacies, share how pharmacies can navigate the accreditation process and discuss why accreditation is an increasingly valuable competitive tool.

“The pharmacy market plays a significant role when it comes to collaborating on patient care with other members of the patient’s care team,” says Bonome. “Accredited, patient-centered specialty pharmacies that demonstrate how their interventions improve medication adherence and patient outcomes will be best positioned to win more business as this market becomes more crowded.”

Asembia’s annual event is the largest U.S. healthcare conference for specialty pharmacy. Six thousand pharmacy providers, pharma/biotech manufacturers, healthcare payers, drug wholesalers and other specialty pharmacy stakeholder organizations are expected to attend.
