URAC Invites Public Comment on Update to Core Accreditation Standards

Thursday, August 27th, 2015

URAC is opening a public comment period for the update of its Core accreditation standards. The public comment period for URAC’s updated Core accreditation standards opens on August 27, 2015. Comments will be accepted through September 28, 2015.

Core standards address many of the fundamental practices that affect the quality of a healthcare organization’s operations. These standards include organizational structure, policies and procedures, information management, quality management, and staff qualifications. URAC’s Core standards are regularly updated so that its accreditation products are current with the latest rulemaking, trends, and standards related to healthcare industry best practices.

“Core standards are fundamental to all of URAC’s well-known and highly-respected healthcare accreditation products. This update will keep URAC at the forefront of providing a necessary verification of quality and compliance with best practices in an ever-changing healthcare community,” said Steve Daviss, MD, chief medical information officer at M3 Information and a member of URAC’s Core Advisory Committee.

URAC’s accreditation standards are developed in consultation with an independent advisory committee of industry experts. During the public comment period, URAC welcomes input on those standards from interested parties.

“I’ve always thought that compliance with industry-recognized standards demonstrates a plan’s dedication to excellence as well as a willingness to be publicly-recognized as a quality organization,” said Wanda F. Allison, RN, senior manager for corporate quality and accreditation for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. “I have had the privilege of participating on the URAC Standards Committee for four years, and the work of that committee helps shape the review process. Likewise, public comment is an important aspect of the process because it provides a forum for others to help normalize the language of the standards and helps assure that compliance is attainable across the spectrum of entities looking to become accredited.”

The official announcement for public comment is available here.
