URAC Telehealth Poster Featured at Important Telehealth Industry Event

Friday, November 20th, 2015

At the recent fall summit of the Center for Telehealth and e-Health Law (CTeL), URAC was invited to participate in the event’s poster session. The poster created by URAC for the summit described in detail for the legal and policy experts in attendance how an iterative dialogue was used to create URAC’s new telehealth accreditation standards.

URAC recently became the first organization to launch independent standards for the accreditation of telehealth (also called telemedicine) providers. CTeL, which bills itself as “one of the preeminent organizations in the field of telehealth and e-health related issues” and the “‘go-to’ legal and regulatory telehealth organization,” regularly holds these summits to bring together experts involved in the practice and oversight of telehealth. Along with some of the leading lawyers in the field, there were also many physicians in attendance who are also appointees to their respective state medical boards.

The URAC poster detailed the thorough process leading to the creation of the new standards and measures now being used to verify the quality and performance of applicant telehealth organizations.

After being approached by providers and encouraged to begin offering a telehealth accreditation program, URAC set about on the process featured on the poster that first investigated what emerging trends, need for standards, and areas of performance existed for applicants to prove their quality. Standards and measures were developed after an intense back-and-forth dialogue was conducted between URAC staff and telehealth providers, industry specialists, risk assessment experts, and attorneys assembled by URAC to provide their insight and advice. After focus areas were determined and standards and measures written using this iterative dialogue, the new telehealth standards and measures were then made available for public comment. They are currently in beta release for fine-tuning.

The poster chronicles the almost 12-month process of creating URAC’s new independent telehealth accreditation program – from idea to actual program. Click the poster below to see a larger version of it.
