William R. Vandervennet, Jr. Named URAC’s Chief Operating Officer; Vernon C. Rowen Named Senior Vice President of External and Legal Affairs

William R. Vandervennet, Jr., Named URAC s Chief Operating Officer; Vernon C. Rowen Named Senior Vice President of External & Legal Affairs

Washington, DC – URAC, a leading health care accreditation, education and measurement organization, today announced the appointment of William R. Vandervennet, Jr., BSN, MHSA, FACHE, to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer. In this role, Vandervennet will oversee a wide range of URAC’s key functions such as Client Services, Research, Development and Planning, Information Technology, Finance and Human Resources.  Additionally, Vernon Rowen has been appointed as Senior Vice President of External and Legal Affairs. Rowen, formerly Vice President of State Government Affairs for Express Scripts, Inc., and until recently, a URAC Board member representing the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, will pursue URAC’s federal and state government relations objectives as well as enhance public awareness of URAC and its mission.

Spielman, URAC President and CEO. “With Bill’s proven experience in developing and leading innovative health programs, and Vernon’s excellent analytical, advocacy and communications skills, we will be able to enhance and expand URAC’s efforts to continue to meet the changing needs of the health care market.”

With over 25 years’ experience, Vandervennet has worked in key positions for such firms as Well Point, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, MAXIMUS and BlueCross BlueShield of the National Capital Area. He also has more than a decade of experience with start-up companies and establishing business units within larger firms. Vandervennet is an energetic leader who enhances revenue and profits by leading sales efforts and motivating people to continuously improve results.

“I’m excited to be a part of URAC’s ongoing mission to enhance the quality of the health care system through consumer protection and empowerment,” said Vandervennet. “My experience with establishing and leading health care businesses gives me a unique ability to contribute to URAC’s continued success in this newly created position of Chief Operating Officer.”

Prior to his experience at Express Scripts, Rowen held senior legislative and policy positions at the Health Insurance Association of America and the American Association of Health Plans. Since February, he has been working with URAC on an interim basis to lead URAC’s government relations activities.

“After having worked with URAC as a member of the Board of Directors, I am eager to begin this position with the External and Legal Affairs team and become more involved in URAC’s efforts to educate consumers and improve quality in the health care industry,” said Rowen. “I am excited to be a part of this group that strives to help organizations validate their commitment to quality and accountability.”
