Advisory Committee of Cross-Sector Health Leaders Assembled to Guide Development
URAC announced that its forthcoming Health Care AI Accreditation is on track for a Q3 2025 launch, marking a major step toward establishing trustworthy, standardized oversight for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care settings. This new accreditation will provide health systems, technology developers, providers, patients and other stakeholders with a verifiable framework to ensure safe, ethical and equitable implementation of AI tools in clinical environments.
To guide the development of this landmark program, URAC has assembled a national Health Care AI Advisory Committee comprised of more than 25 experts representing a diverse range of organizations across health care delivery, digital health, public policy, academic research, legal compliance and patient safety.
“The urgency around AI oversight in health care is real. Tools are already being used at the bedside, and we need guardrails now, not two years from now,” said Shawn Griffin, MD, President and CEO of URAC. “This committee brings together leading voices to ensure the accreditation we launch will reflect best practices across the entire health ecosystem, with patients at the center.”
URAC’s Health Care AI Committee members represent organizations including Verily, AHIP, Northwell Health, Aidoc, Pfizer and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The program aims to address critical areas of concern, including:
- Data privacy and patient consent
- Bias and equity in AI model development and deployment
- Clinical oversight, liability and provider training
- Interoperability and governance in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape
URAC is building on its 35-year history of health care accreditation leadership and on prior work integrating AI standards into existing programs, such as telemedicine and utilization management. With this launch, URAC will become the first health care accrediting body to offer a national, independent framework for responsible AI use in clinical and administrative settings.
