2026 marks the 100th celebration of Black History Month, with this year’s theme recognizing a century of commemorations. It is also a moment to reflect on the profound contributions of Black physicians, nurses, pharmacists, public health leaders and other professionals who have shaped modern medicine and strengthened the pursuit of equitable health care. Figures such as Dr. James McCune Smith, Dr. Myra Adele Logan and Dr. Patricia Bath redefined what was possible in medicine, expanded access to care and broke systemic barriers that limited who could serve as healers, innovators and leaders. Their work continues to influence clinical practice and public health today.
Beyond individual figures, Black health care professionals have led advancements in community health, behavioral health, prevention, technology and workforce development, often addressing gaps in access and outcomes that persist across the health care ecosystem. As we mark this centennial year, Black History Month underscores the importance of representation, inclusion and equity in strengthening care quality and improving population health.
