AI is already influencing health care, from clinical documentation and patient communication to risk prediction and workflow support. But URAC President and CEO Shawn Griffin, MD, says responsible adoption requires more than enthusiasm for new technology.
In a Becker’s Hospital Review op-ed, Dr. Griffin emphasizes that AI tools used in health care need clear governance, defined oversight and ongoing monitoring. Organizations must understand who is accountable for AI outputs, how performance is evaluated and when human review is required.
“Organizations that succeed with AI will not be the ones that move fastest,”
He also points to the importance of workforce readiness. Clinicians and staff need practical AI literacy so they understand what these tools are designed to do, where they may fall short and when to question the output. “Organizations that succeed with AI will not be the ones that move fastest,” Dr. Griffin writes. “They will be the ones that adopt with discipline, invest in workforce readiness, define ownership clearly and monitor performance continuously.”
URAC’s Health Care AI Accreditation provides an independent framework for organizations that develop or use AI-enabled tools in health care. It helps organizations demonstrate responsible practices for governance, risk management, transparency, accountability and ongoing monitoring.
