In a new article published in Becker’s Hospital Review, URAC President and CEO Shawn Griffin, MD, explores how health care organizations can use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency while maintaining clinical oversight and accountability.
TimelyCare, the first behavioral health organization to earn URAC’s Health Care AI Accreditation, uses AI to identify potentially concerning posts in its student peer-support community as well as to prioritize clinical chart reviews. The AI tools help clinicians focus their attention where it’s needed most. URAC’s accreditation standards provided a framework for developing, testing and monitoring the technology while maintaining appropriate clinical safeguards.
Successful AI implementation requires more than accurate algorithms. Clinical and technical teams must work together to define what AI tools should identify, establish clear protocols for responding to flagged concerns and continuously evaluate performance. With the right safeguards in place, AI can help clinicians recognize risks that might otherwise go unnoticed and intervene when patients need support.
