As artificial intelligence becomes more common in health care, policymakers are paying closer attention to how organizations develop, deploy and use AI tools. AI has the potential to support health care organizations in many ways, from administrative work to clinical operations, but innovation can’t be separated from patient safety, accountability and trust.
Recent House Appropriations Committee report language encourages the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to use accreditation programs and standards, where appropriate, as one way to support responsible AI. Health care organizations need practical ways to evaluate AI tools, manage risk and demonstrate that appropriate safeguards are in place. Accreditation can provide a structured, independent framework for organizations working to develop, deploy or use AI responsibly.
URAC’s Health Care AI Accreditation addresses key areas including governance, risk management, data integrity, transparency, monitoring and accountability. URAC designed it for both organizations that develop health care AI and those that use it as part of care delivery, operations or decision-making, the accreditation addresses key areas including governance, risk management, data integrity, transparency, monitoring and accountability.
The goal is to help organizations build trust in AI by demonstrating that they have the processes and safeguards needed to use it responsibly. As health care AI evolves, accreditation can support innovation while keeping safety, quality and patients at the center.
