May is Mental Health Month and serves as a reminder that mental health is health. Access to mental health care should reflect that fact but often falls short.
Mental health parity reflects the need for organizations to ensure that coverage for mental health services isn’t more restrictive than for medical and surgical services. And as awareness grows, more organizations need a way to ensure they are meeting the critical needs of their populations, no matter the diagnoses.
During Mental Health Month, the focus can extend to the systems that shape how people receive care. Parity plays a central role in that work by supporting more consistent coverage for mental health conditions and helping to ensure that people can access the care they need.
