Tennessee is taking a more coordinated approach to supporting community health workers through statewide collaboration, workforce development and program accountability. Community health workers continue to play an increasingly important role across the health care system, particularly in supporting care navigation, health education, community outreach and connections to social support services. As CHW programs continue to expand nationwide, organizations and policymakers are placing greater emphasis on sustainable workforce models, operational consistency and measurable program quality.
Tennessee’s statewide approach to strengthening and supporting the CHW workforce includes partnerships among TennCare, the Tennessee Community Health Worker Association and other stakeholders focused on workforce development, coordination and long-term program support. URAC’s Community Health Worker Program Accreditation focuses on the organizational infrastructure that supports community health workers, including workforce support, program operations and quality oversight. The accreditation helps organizations across health care and community-based settings strengthen the infrastructure that supports CHWs.
