Mental Health Support at Work Is No Longer a Perk

Posted in Mental Health at Work

For years, workplace mental health support was often viewed as a benefit. A valuable addition to an employee benefits package, but not necessarily an essential part of the workplace experience. That is changing.

As conversations around mental health become more common and employees increasingly recognize the connection between work and well-being, expectations are shifting. Mental health support is no longer simply a “nice to have.” Employees increasingly expect their employers to recognize its importance and take meaningful action.

Expectations are growing

The need is clear. An estimated 15% of working-age adults(opens in new tab) have a mental health condition, while 59% of workers(opens in new tab) experience negative mental health impacts related to stress at work.

Employees also recognize that employers have a role to play. According to the American Psychological Association’s Work and Well-being Survey, 87% of employees believe actions from their employers would help their mental health.

Together, these numbers point to a broader shift: Mental health is not separate from the workplace. It is part of the employee experience.

That means organizations are being asked to think beyond whether they offer an Employee Assistance Program, behavioral health benefits or other mental health resources. Those resources remain important, but employees are increasingly looking at the bigger picture of how their workplace approaches mental health.

From offering support to demonstrating commitment

The evolution of workplace mental health reflects a broader change in employee expectations. Employees want to know that their employers take mental health seriously. Not just through the resources available to them, but through a demonstrated commitment to creating a workplace where mental health is recognized and supported.

For organizations, this means moving from simply offering mental health benefits to prioritizing mental health as part of the workplace experience.

That shift also creates an opportunity for employers to take a closer look at their current approach. What is working? Where are there opportunities to improve? And how can organizations demonstrate that mental health is a meaningful part of their commitment to their employees?

Making mental health part of the workplace conversation

A mentally healthy workplace doesn’t happen through a single benefit or initiative. It requires organizations to consider how mental health fits into their broader workplace practices and culture.

As employee expectations continue to evolve, organizations that make mental health a visible and meaningful priority can demonstrate that they understand what today’s workforce increasingly expects from the workplace.

Mental health support is no longer just a perk. It’s an expectation.
