As the landscape of work and employee wellbeing shifts, organizations are recognizing the crucial role they play in employee mental health and health equity. Seeking accreditation in these areas conveys a commitment to quality and improving population wellbeing.
URAC hosts webinars to delve into our two new accreditations: Mental Health at Work, created in partnership with One Mind at Work, and Health Equity. In November, Dr. Shawn Griffin, CEO of URAC, led an illuminating discussion with Dr. Kathleen Pike, President and CEO of One Mind at Work, and Jennier Richards PharmD, JD, URAC’s Senior Director of Public Development.
“Largely, there’s a tremendous awareness around mental health at work,” says Dr. Pike, who also recently spoke in a panel with New York City’s Mayor, Eric Adams, at a ‘Wellbeing at Work’ event hosted by the Mental Health Coalition and at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos. “But a challenge, a real hurdle, is how we address mental health at work. The Mental Health at Work Index is designed to help people work smarter, work more effectively to have greater impact around mental health at work programs.”

Based on One Mind at Work’s Mental Health at Work Index, URAC’s Mental Health at Work accreditation — which is available for all organizations — recognizes employers’ influence on employee wellbeing. Employers have a powerful opportunity to positively shape employees’ lives, improve their wellbeing, and bolster organizational success. Younger generations in particular place high value on company cultures that promote psychological safety and protect employee mental health.
The Mental Health at Work accreditation scores companies based on four progressive levels. These levels indicate organizational ability to address mental health concerns, spanning from reactive to progressively proactive strategies. The accreditation also provides a structured framework for improving these strategies.
Similar to the Mental Health at Work accreditation, the Health Equity accreditation was also created in partnership with a diverse array of industry experts, including the National Minority Quality Forum. Aiming to integrate health equity principles across diverse sectors to minimize disparities, this program is open to any health care organization seeking to operationalize health equity principles. To promote unbiased care, the accreditation focuses on organizational commitment, strategic planning and equitable services and support.
The accreditation aligns with national standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ framework for health equity. This accreditation recognizes health equity as a holistic organizational initiative, focusing not solely on patient care but on integrating equity principles throughout company practices to promote inclusivity, fairness and quality.
This webinar discussion emphasized the importance of not only addressing mental health and health equity, but embodying strategies throughout organizational operations to improve company culture. In seeking accreditation, organizations signal that they are working to build healthier, more supportive environments for all.
